How to Wash a Cap?

This publication is also available in: Français English (UK) Deutsch Italiano Español

The chic women’s cap is one of the fashion accessories that requires maintenance. Whether it’s branded or not, over time, external factors can leave sweat stains on the cap.

Many of us wonder how to wash a cap, and what to do to ensure that its material isn’t damaged. Indeed, there are precautions to take when washing it.

A little laundry session with our team, how does that sound?

Maintaining a cap starts right now!

Those who care, take good care! Taking care of your fashion accessory isn’t complicated. The maintenance of the cap begins the moment you have it in your hands. If that’s not the case, it can quickly get damaged. What do you think are the essentials to know for maintaining a cap?

The best thing for a person is to have a spare cap first to avoid wearing the same one all the time. Over time, with climate and sweat, it deserves maintenance if you plan to keep it as long as possible.

Specifics to consider when washing your cap

Of course, you need to wash the cap; otherwise, it wouldn’t be elegant at all. Besides ruining your outfit, it won’t smell good on your head either. And let’s admit that wearing a dirty cap is not at all dignified of the trend.

No matter your cap, there are always solutions to restore it and make it as clean as when you purchased it. You need to consider a few points to avoid making mistakes:

Your type of cap:

It is really important to know the type of cap you have. Unlike older models, the visors of new cap models are almost plastic. There is a 99% chance that it will deteriorate in the wash.

The visors of older cap models are made of cardboard and are not at all compatible with water.

Apart from the visor, you also need to consider the material of your cap’s body. Each material has its own way of being washed, and while one might work for another, it may not be suitable for others.

Cotton, wool, cashmere, and polyester are all different from one another. Wool, for example, is softer than polyester; therefore, the methods and products used to clean these two are strictly different.

The washing type of your cap:

You can wash your cap in two ways: hand washing or machine washing. In both cases, there is regular washing and deep cleaning.

It all depends on the point mentioned earlier to choose the method to wash your cap. There are types of caps that cannot be washed regularly. There are also types of harmful products for soft materials that should be avoided.

Washing your cap by hand: the choice of precaution

If you can, it’s better to always wash your cap by hand. It’s more reassuring to see the cap in front of you while washing it than to put it in a machine, where God knows what happens inside. No matter the style of the cap, hand washing is the best way to clean it.

How to wash your cap by hand?

Take a basin of water and fill it with cold water. Ideally, you should always use cold water. Also, note that it’s better not to use ammonia-based detergents. Soapy water does the job just fine. You can use any soap, as long as it’s made specifically for laundry.

How to remove stains from the cap?

To remove sweat stains from the cap, the most effective grandmother’s tip is baking soda. Soak the cap in water, scrub it with soap, then sprinkle a little baking soda powder on the stained area and gently scrub it with your usual brush.

And finally, rinse the cap with water. You’ll see that you won’t even need bleach. Its fabric will regain its original texture and appearance.

How to wash the new models of caps?

The new models of caps are those we have seen recently and that are also on the market. Sometimes, their visors are made of plastic, unlike older models with cardboard visors as previously mentioned.

Washing a baseball cap or a snapback is easy once you follow the steps to do so.

No hot water, no bleach, and no ammonia-based products. That’s all you need to adhere to, as these can change the color and damage the cap’s material.

What about the older versions of caps?

If you still have an old cap, it’s because you’ve taken care of it. Generally, older cap models have cardboard visors. Therefore, it is recommended not to soak them in water.

Water and cardboard are two materials that should never merge. Cardboard can get damaged, and you may have to say goodbye to your cap.

But that doesn’t mean it shouldn’t be washed! A little wash is required. That means taking a brush or sponge soaked in soapy water and gently scrubbing the dirty areas, and you’re good to go.

Washing your cap in a machine, is it possible?

Since we have seen how to wash the cap by hand, we honestly advise you to never put your cap in the machine.

Just imagine how clothes expand or shrink, not to mention any other anomalies, do you think a cap could come out unscathed? No! And even if you tried it once and it came out intact, over time, it would deteriorate slowly.

Machines cannot completely remove sweat marks and other stains from a cap. That’s why washing it by hand is the safest option.

Drying the cap

After washing comes drying. We are really lucky to have machines at our disposal to make our household tasks easier. Once you’re done washing, pop it in the dryer!

But here again, as it’s not advisable to put the cap in the washing machine; it would be wise to let it dry in the open air. Even dryers should be avoided.

So give your cap the time it needs to dry.

Don’t overdo it either. If you find that it is dry, take it off the line, as the sun’s rays can also warp your cap.
