Hee-Sun Han is an expert in K-beauty, a field that is experiencing an unprecedented global boom. The famous 10-step Korean skincare routine, now essential in the world of beauty, is captivating more and more followers around the globe. During her visit to Germany for a K-beauty event at the Berlin cultural center, I had the opportunity to speak with her. She reveals her secrets for achieving skin as radiant as that of Korean pop icons, as well as her favorite products.

Can you introduce yourself and explain what your job entails?

• My name is Hee-Sun Han, I am the president of the International Association for Korean Beauty Exchange in Chungbuk and the director of the Beauty Art School. I am also a professor at the university and makeup artist for Korean television channels.

Why do you think K-beauty is so popular around the world right now?

• One of the main factors is the boom of Hallyu (the Korean wave) since the 2000s. The popularity of Korean dramas, K-pop, and K-pop idols has sparked international interest in Korean beauty products and skincare methods.

What does the Korean skincare routine consist of?

• Each skin type has specific characteristics and sensitivities, so products and methods vary. However, a basic routine generally includes cleansing, exfoliating, toner, serum, moisturizing, and sun protection.

What products or steps are essential for achieving beautiful skin?

• An effective skincare routine must include cleansing, moisturizing, and protecting the skin. Choosing good products and maintaining a regular, thorough regimen are crucial. Daily application of masks also helps to maintain continuous hydration.

What ingredients do you recommend in skincare products?

• I particularly recommend retinol, vitamins, and niacinamide (vitamin B3). At high concentrations (10-20%), niacinamide offers numerous benefits, such as evening out skin tone, improving elasticity, and hydration.

What products can you not live without?

• It’s really hard to say. I think it’s the combination of all the products that yields the best results. All Korean products are scientifically studied. For beautiful and healthy skin, functional products like sunscreens, complexion care, and moisturizers are essential.

Do you think K-dramas on Netflix have influenced the K-beauty trend?

• Yes, especially among young people, the interest in the beauty secrets of Korean stars, whether it’s skincare for perfect skin or makeup techniques, has significantly increased. Now, K-beauty trends influence both young people and adults of all ages.

Which K-beauty brands or products do you particularly love?

• Currently, the trend highlights not only glowing skin but also well-defined lips. The “Suryeohan” lip balm is a skincare product that offers makeup-like effects such as exfoliation, wrinkle reduction, complexion care, volume, and elasticity. I often use it during TV performances of singers.

Are you surprised by the global success of K-beauty?

• Yes, as an expert, I am surprised every year by the export figures of Korean cosmetic products. One of the reasons Korea is at the forefront of global beauty trends today is the constant quest for innovation. Korean manufacturers combine modern technologies with natural ingredients to continuously create innovative products. These efforts have solidified Korea’s status as a global beauty trendsetter.
