Venice Film Festival, Telluride: Film and Style Festivals

This publication is also available in: Français English (UK) Deutsch Italiano Español

Back to school means the marathon of film festivals! With the Venice Film Festival and the Telluride Film Festival just wrapping up, it’s now Toronto, Deauville, New York, and then London that will unveil the upcoming trends from the big screen, but also those from the runways! Because yes, between two screenings and their many emotions, the paths taken by festival-goers and guests turn into a true catwalk. They are both a mirror of the festival’s atmosphere and a sort of trailer for what we can expect at the upcoming fashion weeks!

When the atmosphere of film festivals influences the dress code

It’s a fact, film festivals are often associated with glamour and beautiful outfits. This is especially true of the Cannes Film Festival, which – unfortunately – often highlights tuxedos and sequined gowns more than the works of the seventh art… (however, the ban this year on overly imposing outfits or those that reveal too much of the body shows a possible reevaluation). Nevertheless, not all film festivals see their program overshadowed by tuxedos! It is quite interesting to observe how the dress code typically matches the type of festival taking place.

We had the perfect example in recent weeks with the Venice Film Festival and the Telluride Film Festival. Indeed, on one hand, we had the Italian festival, which is in line with the glamour/”Hollywood” vein of Cannes, but without its ostentatious “look at me” flair. The Mostra aims to be romantic and chic, with teams gently navigating the lagoon aboard Vaporetto boats, revealing elegant and sophisticated outfits.

Moreover, while we observe a polished dressing, a few touches of originality still invite themselves. After the Joachim Trier Summer t-shirt worn by Elle Fanning at Cannes, it was the sweater featuring Luca Guadagnino worn by Julia Roberts that stood out! Nothing better to promote the director’s new film, After The Hunt, in which she plays one of the lead roles.

The second festival immerses us in a completely different setting. Set in a small village in the midst of the Colorado mountains, the dress code of the Telluride Film Festival is much more casual and reflects everyone’s personal style. Specifically, polished shoes and three-piece suits are swapped during the day for hiking boots and plaid shirts. A more accessible, down-to-earth vibe, like a big summer camp that feels good and reflects a certain authenticity. As night falls, slightly more chic and refined outfits are still welcome!

Film Festivals as Teasers for Future Haute Couture Collections?

If the Venice Biennale piqued our curiosity, it was partly to gauge the initial reactions to the most anticipated films of the coming months (Frankenstein, Bugonia, Hamnet…). But also to discover some hints about what the first women’s ready-to-wear collection by Jonathan Anderson for Dior will look like!

Between silhouettes with marked hips, textured work, draping, and other folds, the Irish designer simply amazed us!

Each screening has thus revealed the new signature cuts of the house. Worn by Alba Rohrwacher, Rebecca Marder, Monica Barbaro, and Mia Goth, the outfits displayed an elegant and polished spirit, both in their cut and colors. And the highlight of this sneak peek of the upcoming collection was Greta Lee’s arrival, radiant in a dress that was both graphic and delicate.

Luca Guadagnino, Andrew Garfield, and Will Price were also wrapped in Dior creations. Between traditional suits, vintage colors, and floral notes.

When You Rely on Sure Values, Like a Good Movie You Watch on Repeat

While the outfits revealed at festivals are as numerous as the selected films, there are still a few exceptions to the rule. On one hand, Cate Blanchett has once again worn a dress she had already donned during the awards season. A commendable approach that is more reasoned in the face of all this opulence and the race for novelty.

Additionally, one of the outfits that has garnered the most attention is a creation by Dario Vitale for his debut Versace collection. We first saw it worn by Julia Roberts. Then, enchanted by the ensemble, Amanda Seyfried contacted the actress to see if she could also wear it: with the green light given, the actresses have each taken turns shining a light on the designer’s work and could very well have launched a new trend!

It’s clear that outfits from film festivals sometimes resemble a beloved movie that we replay every year without getting tired of it.
