“Summer’s gonna be hot, summer’s gonna be hot” as Stone & Charden used to say. And a hot summer is a summer spent by the water! To keep you at the top of the trend, even in a swimsuit, we have prepared a selection of beach towels from your favorite brands, to bring a sunny catwalk spirit to the beach.

What material of beach towels should you choose?

Whether you are spending the summer in Pampelonne, opting for a stay on a boat, or going for a summer road trip with a backpack, the type of beach towel you seek will not be the same. Indeed, depending on your comfort desires and space constraints, some beach towels may be more preferable than others.

In response to these various needs, we have observed, over the years, a growing range of beach towel varieties. This includes weaving, shape, folding, and transport options, to better adapt to everyone’s sunny breaks. Thanks to advancements in technology, in terms of fibers and weaving, the compositions of beach towels have been redesigned to improve their performance, quality, and durability.

Classic cotton and polyester beach towels

The first model is the classic cotton and polyester beach towel, thick, fluffy, and softening the bumps of small pebbles that always seem to land right where it hurts.

It has accompanied us for years and is a guarantee of quality and comfort. It wraps us perfectly from head to toe, like a warm and salty air hug. With it, anything is possible in terms of style, whether in a solid color or showcasing your unacknowledged passions, be it Dolphins, Johnny Hallyday, or memories from another summer spent in Palavas-les-Flots… Between kitsch and trendy patterns, designers pour their creativity into designs that surely make an impression by the water.

While they dry quickly between salty outings, the downside of these beach towels is the space they occupy. Under the arm, it’s manageable, but when it’s time to fit it into the micro luggage of 40x30x20 cm included with the cheapest Vueling flight ticket, that’s when it gets tricky…

Why are microfiber beach towels so popular?

Microfiber beach towels, a trendy model for a few years, have successfully transitioned from the pool scene to the beach, somewhat like the sock sandal, to be honest!

Now covering the miles of sand on our golden coasts, the microfiber texture allows you, on one hand, to dry off well, and importantly, to take up very little space in your belongings. This is the point that has made it so popular, especially among road trip and backpacking enthusiasts. However, for comfort, it’s better not to be too sensitive on a pebbly beach, as its thinness does not create a plush layer like its thicker counterpart. In terms of design, the models often lean towards the minimalism of a single color rather than a rainbow of colors and tribal patterns.

The fouta for a bohemian spirit

A cousin of beach towels, the fouta entices with its bohemian ambiance and slightly more refined style.

Very thin, it allows for easy storage, but it won’t absorb the leftover saltwater on your skin as well and may get quickly drenched. Its strong point is that it can also be wrapped around your waist in a pareo spirit.

What shape of beach towel to choose?

Round, square, rectangular… It’s up to you to choose what is most practical based on your size. Round towels, though pretty, require a large diameter to comfortably lie down on. Provided the beach isn’t too crowded for setup. The downside is that they take up more space on the beach and in your bag. Another option is the beach poncho, which allows you to dry off and change away from prying eyes.

In terms of transport, brands now offer models sold with straps, or folding like a bag with Velcro and straps, as seen at Balenciaga.
