Not a day goes by without spotting a fashionista wearing this pair of sandals: the Birkenstock.
This summer of 2022, it has literally flooded our feeds, as well as our streets. We see it on the feet of the trendiest influencers and fashionistas alike who are following the current fashion trends.
The Birkenstock in summer has become THE sandal to wear.
So, why is that? How did this pair of shoes manage to establish itself in the market? Which model should you wear in the summer?
I will answer these questions in this article.
Let’s dive into the current phenomenon: the Birkenstock in summer.
Birkenstock, the label that has conquered the fashion sphere
There are brands that are considered timeless. Birkenstock is one of them. Since its inception, the German label has continued to grow, establishing itself as a giant in the footwear industry.
The keys to the success of the cork-soled sandal? Comfort and authenticity. However, while Birkenstocks had no trouble selling, their image was somewhat tarnished by the very functionality attributed to them. A Birkenstock was practical, not fashionable.
But this was before a major player in the fashion world gave the brand a boost, allowing it to take a turn. Starting in 2013, the brand began to be appreciated by fashionistas. This transition was made possible thanks to Phoebe Philo, artistic director for Céline, who showcased the Arizona model during a fashion show.
A publicity boost that was highly beneficial for the brand, allowing it to reach a new target audience: the fashionistas.
From Arizona to Boston, these Birkenstocks that have managed to establish themselves as a fashion trend
And while the conquest of fashionistas began with the Arizona model (the birk with two thick straps), it’s now the Boston model that has established itself as THE trendy shoe.
This somewhat clunky shoe that resembles a slipper more than a hype shoe is part of what is called Normcore, the trendy stylistic movement that consists of dressing without following any trend.
And this is one of the reasons why the Birkenstock in summer with the example of the Boston mule has become so popular. The attraction to what resembles anti-fashion has brought to the forefront pieces that, at first glance, had nothing appealing.
Add to that a desire to be fashionable with comfortable pieces that can easily match any outfit, and you have favorable conditions for the emergence of a trend that was not anticipated.
Which Birkenstock to wear in summer?
Now that you’re convinced of the popularity of the Birkenstock, perhaps the urge to follow this (non-trend) trend is tempting you?
If so, here’s a small selection of some summer Birkenstocks to wear during your summer vacations.
The leather Birkenstock
I’m slightly crushing on this 100% leather model from the Birkenstock range.
Here, the high-end model will subtly elevate an outfit. Leather is a symbol of quality and distinction.
With a basic outfit (flare jeans + camisole) but made of quality pieces, you’re assured of being well-dressed, simply.
When worn, they are better appreciated during a stroll or a night out rather than at the beach.
The lined suede Boston Birkenstock
I’ll admit, this isn’t the most summery model you can find.
This one is better reserved for mid-season or cozier evenings at home.
However, they do have the merit of being incredibly comfortable!
We love wearing them with a pair of (thin) socks and/or with details, and rolled-up pants for an urban fashion effect.
But paired with a mini skirt, the lined Boston also marries very well because its “comfortless” look balances out the sexy aspect of the skirt.
The black Birkenstock
This one is also made of suede. In black, the Boston Birkenstock stands out from the other models. It’s rarer, but I find it more elegant.
We try to pair it with lighter shades once again to balance the overall look.
With light wide jeans, palazzo pants, or a fitted long dress, this model will pair very well.
The “Crocs” style Birkenstock
For fans of Crocs and originality, this Birki will surely be your favorite.
You’ll need to dare the neon green, but when paired with a simple, uniform outfit, this pair will definitely make a statement.
And for those who have a definite no, don’t risk trying them, or you might end up adopting them…
The Khaki Arizona Birkenstock
This pair of Birkenstocks will perfectly complete your summer wardrobe.
For two reasons:
- It completely fits into the summer sandal trend. At the beach or in the city, it can easily match with several of your summer outfits.
- True to the brand, this pair is 100% comfortable. Having worn them, I can only confirm this. This model is particularly lightweight, making it easy to transport. And if you have to walk, they will accompany you during your summer strolls without too much discomfort!
The comfort factor, a controversial yet adored aesthetic, is more than enough for the Birkenstock to establish itself as the trendy shoe of the summer.
💡 Excited about dressing in a normcore style? Take a look at the mousse clogs and slides. They say they’re also trending!
On the other hand, if you’re more faithful to timeless classics, turn to women’s espadrilles, a summer essential.
