The origin of cashmere and its production

The fine and very soft fabric that is cashmere comes from goat fibers. Indeed, it is not just the goat that has taken the name of this legendary fabric: Cashmere is a mountainous region of the Indian subcontinent, where cashmere was originally produced!

Europe discovered this noble fabric at the end of the 18th century when the French Empress Joséphine received cashmere shawls as a gift from her husband, Napoleon Bonaparte himself. What a classy man ahead of his time! However, the production of cashmere was not democratized in Europe until the early 19th century thanks to significant European industrialists like Guillaume Louis-Ternaux, the creator of the timeless and famous Ternaux shawl.

In 2020, 90% of cashmere production comes from Mongolia and the average production per goat is 150 grams. It’s safe to say that this enhances the prestige of wearing a good cashmere sweater!
Hats, gloves, jackets, pants, scarves, shawls… The cashmere fabric is cut and assembled according to your desires to create the most beautiful piece for your wardrobe. But how do you choose the right model for your best fashion inspirations of the moment? It’s time to explore the different variations of women’s cashmere sweaters that will make you dream!

The types of women’s cashmere sweaters to prioritize

There are a multitude of styles of cashmere sweaters for women that you can wear. We often tend to believe that you must adapt your clothing style to the cashmere sweater you wish to wear proudly. But actually, no… Everything exists, and the limit of cashmere in terms of trends is only your creativity! But since Modalova loves you (you didn’t know that yet 😉), the team offers creative ideas to choose your best cashmere sweater:

  • The V-neck sweater: if you have attractive accessories to showcase, such as a stunning necklace or a beautiful set, we recommend this type of cashmere sweater.
  • The round neck cashmere sweater: a true wardrobe staple! It’s simple, it goes with all types of clothing styles. It’s a reliable choice when you don’t want to overthink your outfit. The cashmere sweater will elevate your casual look and add a touch of flair to your style.
  • The so-called trucker cashmere sweater: our little guilty pleasure in this section. Worn smartly, this cashmere sweater with a high collar and “boyish” style will bring a touch of originality to your wardrobe. A trend still too daring, unjustly reserved for the male universe. Long live oversizing!
  • The turtleneck: a very chic style that can be worn in the coldest seasons as well as in mid-seasons. An indispensable cashmere garment that can be styled with various trendy looks: a pair of jeans for casual wear, a suit for a more professional style, or a skirt to add a bit more aesthetic appeal to your look.

Based on your tastes, we know you will make the right choice 😊. However, choosing the style of your women’s cashmere sweater is not the most challenging part. Selecting the right material for your cashmere can sometimes be a real ordeal! With the different qualities and the number of cashmere threads available on the market, you can quickly become discouraged. That’s where Modalova comes in! We never leave you in doubt. As fashion professionals, we will detail how to choose the fabric of your cashmere sweater.

How to choose a quality cashmere sweater for women?

The best quality of cashmere sweater lies in the number of threads it has: the more your sweater is enriched with threads, the more it will have an unparalleled softness and a silky feel. This does not mean that you should avoid two-thread cashmere sweaters! Furthermore, the lightness of this product will allow you to wear it in warmer seasons, especially in summer.

However, sweaters with more threads (up to a maximum of 12 threads) will be more pleasant to wear and will especially have a stronger insulating property than sweaters made from other types of wool. Not to mention the nobility of your women’s cashmere sweater, which will make it a unique piece in your wardrobe. The mistake you should absolutely avoid is buying sweaters that contain a blend of materials in addition to cashmere, such as rabbit or yak wool. This would compromise the quality of your cashmere.

Another important factor to consider in your choice: the grades of cashmere quality. Just like the Michelin guide stars for rating a dish, cashmere has its own quality index divided into 3 levels of purity:

  1. Grade C (fiber diameter of 19 to 30 microns): the entry-level fiber on the market. You will find it everywhere with a very attractive price, although it doesn’t have much to envy from the other levels of cashmere quality. However, it remains interesting for those on a budget who prioritize aesthetics.
  2. Grade B (fiber diameter of 16 to 19 microns): we start to enter into softer and thinner material than grade C. The sweater will be more pleasant to wear, and the sensation of warmth will be more pronounced. A quality product at more affordable prices.
  3. Grade A (fiber diameter of 15 microns): the crème de la crème! High-quality knitting with insulative effects, fine texture, and elevated comfort. Go for it with your eyes closed; you will not be disappointed!

Finally, if you want to refer to reliable elements, consider the composition of the women’s cashmere sweater as well as the price. In general, the higher the price, the more likely you are to purchase quality of grade A.

How to wash a cashmere sweater?

Should you wash your sweater in the washing machine? Is it feasible to use cleaning products to wash your women’s cashmere sweater? Hot water or cold water to avoid damaging your beautiful garment? Let’s take a closer look!

Contrary to what you might read online, washing your sweater often is recommended. It does not deteriorate its quality; on the contrary: cashmere loves water. Wear it for a few days before washing, and your silky companion will accompany you through your fashion adventures! However, it remains essential not to wash it like your other sweaters.

Always wash your women’s cashmere sweater in cold water. Cashmere begins to lose quality when rinsed with water exceeding 20°C. Also, avoid fabric softeners on a product that is already soft enough. Imagine tanning your skin that is already sufficiently tanned… You can already picture the redness on your body after that exposure, right? Well, it’s the same for cashmere; let it be silky as it knows how to be! 😉

There are long-standing misconceptions about washing cashmere sweaters in the machine. It’s time to put a stop to them! NO, the quality of cashmere does not deteriorate with machine washing. As long as you wash your sweater in cold water, you are safe!
Buy a washing net to protect your sweater from friction in the machine and set the machine to the “wool” program with 400 to 600 spins per minute. And that’s it!

For drying, gently squeeze your cashmere and lay it flat to dry after reshaping it. This will help maintain the structure of the threads’ weave so it retains its original shape. We recommend allowing it to dry away from sunlight and any heat source.

Normally, if you follow the steps outlined above, you shouldn’t have to iron your cashmere sweater. However, if you feel it’s necessary to give your sweater a quick iron, you should do so on a low setting. Be careful: never let the iron come into direct contact with your cashmere, as it could shock the fabric and damage it, and you don’t want that, right? So, prefer using a cloth or a clean towel with a bit of water placed on your iron before getting started!

A little Modalova note: we recommend not ironing the elastic finishes of the collar, sleeves, and body of your women’s cashmere sweater! This would deprive them of their elasticity due to the thermal shock generated by the iron.
