Luxury eco-responsible brands: 5 labels to know

This publication is also available in: Français English (UK) Deutsch Italiano Español

The textile industry is undergoing a major transformation. We are witnessing an increasing emergence of eco-responsible brands that highlight French know-how, produce ethically, and pay attention to their carbon footprint. This observation resonates with two very real factors: the production of the fashion industry, which is classified as the second most polluting industry in the world, and the ecological awareness of Generation Y, which aspires to consume better but less. The famous “less is more.” But what about eco-responsible luxury brands?

Do haute couture houses also understand the importance of environmental issues? Judging by Chanel or more recently Moncler and Dolce Gabana, who have decided to stop using fur and animal skins in their collections, we dare to believe that they do.

To go further, we present a selection of 5 luxury labels that certainly respect the codes of eco-responsibility.

Stella Mc Cartney

Stella Mc Cartney is undoubtedly the most committed fashion designer in the haute couture sphere. Since the creation of her label in 2001, she has proudly defended her ecological values, to the point of completely excluding the use of exotic skins, feathers, leather, and fur in the making of her pieces.

Moreover, as innovative as she is avant-garde, the designer is always looking for an ecological alternative to bring her collections to life. For example, she uses water-based glue, vegan, non-polluting, or recycled materials, and Koba, a faux fur made from plant fibers that is recyclable.

For her, her brand is a “different way of doing luxury”. As a spokesperson for responsible luxury, she continually asserts her position as a committed designer, advocating for a more ecological industry season after season. Her latest creation is the Frayme tote bag, made from mushroom leather.

Vivienne Westwood

Known for her strong stances, eccentric style, and ecological commitment, Vivienne Westwood, the punk luxury designer and eco-fashion ambassador, uses the runways and her collections to spread a message: “Buy less, Choose Well, Make it Last.” On this occasion, she received the Swarovski Award for Positive Change in 2018, an award that highlights her actions in sustainable fashion.

Furthermore, through her brand, the stylist invites everyone to consume in a balanced way. Each of her pieces echoes her commitment to the planet. The clothes are made from ecological or recycled fabrics. Linen, organic cotton, bamboo fiber, the materials are carefully selected.

However, Vivienne Westwood’s involvement in what is called eco-responsible luxury is not limited to creating sustainable clothing; the designer also actively advocates for her commitments. Her campaign “Save The Arctic” in support of Greenpeace and her various demonstrations testify to her environmental commitment.

Marine Serre

We continue this selection of eco-responsible luxury brands to know with the emerging scene of ethical fashion: Marine Serre. From her eponymous brand, the designer launched her label in 2017. She also won the LVMH prize in 2017, which rewards young fashion designers.

The creation process of the brand revolves around two major axes: upcycling, or transforming pieces to give them a second life, and the use of sustainable and recycled fibers such as plant-based and biodegradable materials.

The style is radical. In her men’s and women’s collections, the young designer does not hesitate to play the card of assurance. The prints are colorful, the dresses are adorned with patchwork, and the tops are certainly garish. Accessories such as bags, jewelry, and hats can also be found. Lastly, a haute couture collection with unique pieces worth admiring is visible on her site.

Sydney Pimbley

Sydney Pimbley is a London-based designer, committed to making the fashion and luxury industry more responsible. A grand winner of the LVMH prize 2020, she focuses on creating creative and sustainable knitwear.

Her approach is sustainable. Each piece is handmade with artisanal craftsmanship. She also values upcycling by reusing clothing to give it a second life, as well as recycling. The materials used are noble and align with an eco-responsible approach. For example, the wool she uses to make her clothes comes from a local spinning mill that she visited herself.

As for the style, it is decidedly romantic and a bit provocative. The materials are her playground. In her outfits, Sydney plays with layering, dares to use lace and nudity, and proudly brings embroidery back into fashion.

Gabriela Hearts

Ecologically engaged, the American-Uruguayan designer advocates for conscious luxury fashion. Her creations are both ethical and responsible. Materials such as linen or merino wool, sourced directly from her family ranch, are carefully selected to ensure high quality and ecological friendliness.

But her commitment does not stop at the choice of materials. The carbon footprint is also carefully studied during her fashion shows, and she limits the use of plastic, particularly in her packaging.

Regarding the collections, the clothing reflects the multicultural heritage of the designer. The universe is classic yet ethical, suitable for both women and men. In the boutique, there are also bags with shapes as surprising as they are enchanting, along with a selection of shoes: espadrilles, boots, sandals, etc.
