The Coquette Aesthetic: Why You’ll Embrace It!
This publication is also available in: Français English (UK) Deutsch Italiano Español
Last year, there was the Barbie pink wave, and you won’t be able to escape the super feminine trend of the moment: the coquette aesthetic!
A breeze of ribbons, floral dresses, and lavender colors flood your social media feeds? That’s normal, and if you’re following fashion, it won’t be stopping anytime soon, because the coquette aesthetic is everywhere right now.
Kendall Jenner has adopted a style straight out of Alice in Wonderland, Selena Gomez plays with the image of Lolita, and Lana Del Rey is often cited as the queen of the coquette movement.
Let’s decode this trend that will bring an infinite softness to your wardrobe and, of course, my shopping selection of pieces you can grab on Modalova.
Why is the coquette aesthetic flooding your Insta and TikTok?
The coquette aesthetic is somewhat the logical continuation of the cottage core trend and, like the latter, it touches on both fashion and decor.
The hashtag “coquette” has been counted over 166.6 million times on TikTok with makeup and outfit tutorials that capture the sweet and feminine spirit of this trend.
To understand this fashion, we must turn to female empowerment. The term “coquette” previously had quite a negative connotation of a child-woman who wanted to seduce. Today, as feminism has evolved, the coquette trend is more about self-acceptance and femininity.

An Ode to Femininity
We had already seen the beginnings of this trend at Paris Fashion Week with Chanel with its ballet-themed show and at Chloé with its romantic silhouettes.
This trend for a softer femininity is also reflected in the numbers. Miu Miu, known for its soft aesthetic that aligns well with the coquette trend, has seen its sales soar (+58% in 2023 according to FashionNetwork) with a revenue of 4.7 billion euros.
If you want to delve deeper into this trend, I recommend studying the looks of Brigitte Bardot from the late 1960s or the costumes from the Victorian era. No doubt this will spark your creativity!
Does the coquette style mark the return of the child-woman?
Even though Selena Gomez fully embraces the Lolita look on Insta, the heroine of Vladimir Nabokov’s eponymous novel (1955), this coquette aesthetic trend does not aim to blur the lines between woman and child by playing on an ambiguity of bad taste for our times. On the contrary, it values women who embrace their femininity.
Of course, some details of the Lolita look are present, but the attitude is different.

The hair bow
An essential accessory of the coquette look, the bow is also so easy to wear and brings THE subtle coquette touch. No need to go overboard; just add a bow to your hair (preferably pink or white) to a simple outfit, and you’re all set.
The top
Tied, open, light, choose your comfortable and soft top. The coquette aesthetic should remain fluid.
A lace top will reveal a bit of skin, but be careful, coquette and vulgarity do not go well together, so stick to soft colors and cuts that enhance without clinging.
The skirts
Mini, full of ruffles, or tweed, have fun with mini skirts to showcase your legs. You can opt for the total look with a matching tweed blazer. Wearing a straight tweed skirt and a top allows you to accentuate the coquette side by adding accessories to your hair.
The dresses
Summer is just around the corner, and dresses in blue, pale pink, and white will soon flood our streets to our delight.
The tweed dress remains a classic of the coquette aesthetic. You can also choose a light lace dress for a very pure look or a more “fairy tale” aesthetic with a baby blue ruffled dress.
The shoes
The coquette look is adopted from head to toe, and there’s no escaping the shoes, which are the exquisite finishing touch to your look!
For those who swear by flats, this year, high heels are a bit neglected; we slip on our ballet flats for a graceful dancer look. For those who appreciate a bit more height, there’s a solution: the Mary Janes that elevate the look with their small heels.
