This Monday, February 23, was a highly anticipated day in the fashion world. The theme of the MET Gala 2026 dress code has been revealed: it is “Fashion is Art”. The MET Gala, which takes place at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York on May 4, marks the opening of the year’s major fashion exhibition, themed “Costume Art”. The dress code for the evening is therefore very close to that of the exhibition, and we can expect to see pieces that resonate with paintings or works of art. Who is on the MET Gala committee this year?

This year, we will of course see Anna Wintour, former editor-in-chief of Vogue from 1988 to 2025, who now holds the title of Global Chief Content Officer and Artistic Director at Condé Nast, the company that owns Vogue. Alongside her, for the first time since 2016, Beyoncé will be present on the committee as a co-chair of the MET Gala, accompanied by actress Nicole Kidman and tennis star Venus Williams.
In addition to this female committee, we will find designer Anthony Vaccarello, creative director of Yves Saint Laurent, as well as Zoë Kravitz, who will also be co-chairs of this new edition. In a statement, Vogue specifies that the evening will invite everyone to express their own relationship with fashion as an embodied form of art, while celebrating the various representations of the dressed body throughout art history.
The theme being quite broad, we may wonder if we will see performances, and we expect to discover paintings or artistic references to movements, or even political statements from countries that have marked the year. There will surely be theatrical silhouettes, perhaps very experimental, scholarly nods, and even unexpected twists. In short, a surprising theme that will stimulate the imagination. The Costume is Art Exhibition
For the lucky ones visiting New York this year, or the intrepid travelers heading to the United States, what can we expect to see at the exhibition “Costume is Art” offered by the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York?
The exhibition explores the intimate relationship between clothing and the human body, serving as a guiding thread for a journey designed as a dialogue between art and fashion. According to curator Andrew Bolton, it draws inspiration from “the centrality of the dressed body in the museum’s vast collection.” In other words, clothing is not just an accessory here: it becomes the subject, language, and presence.
This edition will also mark the inauguration of the new Condé M. Nast Galleries, a permanent space of nearly 12,000 square feet dedicated to fashion, located near the Great Hall of the Met. Visitors will discover paintings, sculptures, and various objects covering 5,000 years of art history, presented alongside historical and contemporary pieces from the Costume Institute. An ambitious journey where silhouettes engage with the works, and where the dressed body asserts itself as a complete artistic motif.
