Wedge Mules: The Bold Comeback of Wedge Heels

Like the ballerinas, wedge shoes are part of that category of pieces that surprise when they return to trends… Indeed, like their counterparts, these have long been looked down upon, considered outdated and linked to a past that many have often wanted to forget. But, the tide is turning this spring, as wedge mules, or thick-soled flip-flops, are more trendy than ever. This can be explained by a clever mix of nostalgia, comfort, and versatility!
Wedge Shoes: A Mix of Nostalgia, Vintage, and the Bessette Effect?
If you too had to do a double take to confirm that you were indeed seeing a pair of wedges in your Insta feed, rest assured, you are not alone. Indeed, wedge shoes were far from our trend predictions for this year, yet they seem to be making a comeback, and with a redefined image.
In fact, we must admit that wedges resonate within us more as style errors and outdated looks than as key pieces on runways. Nevertheless, the memories they carry – teasing the sensitive string of nostalgia that dictates trends – have gently reintroduced their silhouette into our minds. Just like the Jelly shoes, which are also making a comeback.
And while some pieces, like the Chinese slippers (from two summers ago), are reclaiming their spot in trends by diverting their kitsch aspect, the case of wedges emphasizes the desire to reconnect with the mood of a past fashion, 90s spirit. A desire that has grown since the release of the series Love Story, in which Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy’s looks turned the fashion sphere upside down, instilling a new overflowing love for looks rooted in that decade.

Wedge Shoes Version 2026
However, be careful, as this pair is making its way back into wardrobes but with a more modern silhouette, blending vintage with elegance. In other words, we are discovering more refined pairs, less imposing, and with a very marked design spirit in their cut.
Additionally, wedges are aiming to be less high and present visuals in neutral tones, solid colors, or transparent bands rooted in the minimalist heritage to gain height without attracting all the attention.
We think, for example, of the Natty Mules from Rouje, which reveal themselves in romantic colors, from deep burgundy to leopard print. All with a slight transparency for even more vintage appeal. The heel here is not too high and maintains an elegant fineness, perfectly elongating the silhouette.

Which Wedge Shoes to Adopt This Spring?
The wedge mules, presented just above, will not be the only version of wedges we will see this spring-summer. Indeed, three silhouettes stand out in the trends and are presented as the most adopted – in addition to other more unique versions, like the Toteme wedges, designed to elongate both the silhouette and the foot.
Regarding the models that are set to become the key shoes of the season, we have (in addition to the mules): wedge sandals, featuring straps at the front and/or back. Then wedge flip-flops, which will trade their iconic “foam” silhouette for more refined leather models, thus offering a more sophisticated line to the pair.

How Do Wedges Present Themselves as the Perfect In-Between?
If wedge shoes are so appealing this season, it is not solely due to their new status as the it-piece of the moment. Indeed, they also present other significant advantages, namely: their comfort and versatility.
On one hand, their “true/false” heels have the advantage of allowing us to gain a few centimeters without having to pray for our ankles every time we step off a curb or walk on cobblestones. And that is a real luxury. Plus, in addition to preventing some sprains, they are more pleasant to wear all day long, even if we are going to be walking a lot.

Another appealing point is their versatility to fit various styles and outfits. Indeed, they are suitable for both daytime looks and evening outfits thanks to their few centimeters of height that elongate the silhouette, adding a slightly dressier aspect to an outfit. Thus, a casual outfit can appear a bit more elevated when we have them on our feet.
Thus, they become our best ally for both going for a walk and dining out!
Furthermore, now adopted in models with slimmer silhouettes and neutral tones, wedges can complement outfits of very diverse styles. We find them included in both streetwear styles and with skirts or small polka-dot dresses.
